Here are links that I often share with new mothers:
Exaggerated latch technique video:
I share this link with clients that experience breast or nipple pain with breastfeeding. It is visually one of the best latching videos because of the slow-motion shots and the angles where you can see what the baby’s tongue is supposed to be doing. Please note that this video has no sound, but I have never found the version with the sound. However, this video is worth watching for mothers who need to help their infant have more breast tissue in their mouth when latching.
Breast compression:
This links to the International Breastfeeding Centre (Jack Newman’s clinic in Toronto). The breast compression technique is an essential tool to have for new mothers. To understand this technique and apply it effectively, it is crucial to be able to tell when a baby is swallowing breastmilk or just sucking.
Plugged ducts and mastitis:
The physician guide to breastfeeding is an excellent resource for breastfeeding mothers and a great evidenced-based source of information. It is a blog by Dr. Katrina Mitchel, MD IBCLC. Here is a link to Mastitis, Engorgement and Breast Tissue complications:
Tongue-tie (ankyloglossia):
This is a video made by a paediatrician and it explains tongue-tie and lip-tie as well as their impact on feeding:
This video is also about ankyloglossia, but from an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) perspective:
If you are interested in learning more in-depth about tongue ties and oral restrictions, I recommend this book by Richard Baxter, DMD, MS:
If you don’t have time to read the book, The Alabama Tongue-Tie Center’s website is also packed with information and podcast interviews with Dr Baxter.
